Cherish: Unconventional tale of a black sheep who’s victimized by a stalker and then engaged in a mishap that lands her in prison however her “jail” is a condo, with an electric gadget shackled to her ankle limiting her movement. In time, the deputy who controls the instrument becomes her only buddy. Crisp, unique thriller set in San Francisco. Cast includes Robin Tunney, Tim Blake Nelson, Nora Dunn, Brad Seek, Lindsay Crouse, Liz Phair, and Jason Priestley. (102 minutes, 2002)
The Little Theatre of Jean Renoir: A quartet of little stories in reference to human respectability and the beneficence of country living (instead of subsisting in a dehumanized city forest). Renoir’s celluloid swan song might not be amid his best, however still has much to offer. Cast includes Jeanne Moreau, Femand Sardou, Francoise Arnoul, Jean Carmet, Marguerite Cassan, and Dominique Labourier. (100 minutes, 1971)
The Gorilla: A disheartening comedy whodunit with the Marx Brothers as fumbling investigators prowling around old shady home looking for a murderer. Cast includes The Marx Brothers, Anita Louise, Patsy Kelly, Lionel Atwill, Bela Lugosi, and Joseph Calleia. (66 minutes, 1939)
No Man of Her Own: Turgid drama based on Cornell Woolrich story of Stanwyck presuming another’s identity, later being blackmailed by ex-boyfriend. Cast includes Barbara Stanwyck, John Lund, Jane Cowl, Phyllis Thaxter, and Richard Denning. (98 minutes, 1950)
The Great Manhunt: Fable of the West is nothing particularly special as McCrea dreams of oil wells, while Donlevy takes his gal. Stanwyck ages to one hundred in her role. Cast includes Barbara Stanwyck, Joel McCrea, Brian Donlevy, Thurston Chamber, K. T. Stevens, and Lucien Littlefield. (90 minutes, 1942)
Prophecy: A classical musician and her physician spouse quarrel over what appears to be gigantic salami in upstate Maine after mercury turns animals into large mutants and worse. A ludicrous terror film that is excellent for a few chuckles. Cast includes Talia Shire, Robert Foxworth, Armand Assante, Richard Dysart, and Victoria Racimo. (95 minutes, 1979)
The Alamo: The film covers the impassioned series of events leading up to the legendary 1836 siege in San Antonio, Texas. A more precise rendition than earlier renderings of the tale, it still battles to handle the numerous elements of this historical occurrence. Cast includes Billy Bob Thornton, Dennis Quaid, Jason Patric, Patrick Wilson, and Emilio Echeverria (135 minutes, 2004)
