The Bullfighters: One of more superior Laural and Hardy later works, engaging false identity as Stan is a lookalike for renowned matador. Things really get funny when Stan is thrown in with the bull. This film is too artsy, although on-location photography by Sven Nykvist is often illuminating. Cast includes Shashi Kapoor, Simi Garewal, Romesh Shama, Pinchoo Kapoor, Zul Vellani, and Amrik Singh. Scandalous: Featherbrained sham in regards to investigative Television journalist who runs afoul of a team of con artists as he tries to extricate himself from a homicide charge. Cast includes Robert Hays, John Giegud, Pamela Stephenson, and Jim Dale. (94 minutes, 1984)

Rhapsody: 3 way romance amid opulent Taylor, violinist Gassman, and pianist Ericson. Cast includes Elizabeth Taylor, Vittorio Gassman, John Ericson, Louis Calhern, and Michael Chekhov. (115 minutes, 1954)

The Front Page: Third filming of the Hecht-MacArthur play about crazy and woolly Chicago newspaperman in the 1920s has barely anything new to offer (with the exception of 4-letter words) although continues to be an entertaining piece of work. Cast includes Jack Lenunon, Walter Matthau, Carol Burnett, Susan Sarandon, Vincent Gardenia, David Wayne, Allen Garfield, Austin Pendleton, and Charles Duming. (105 minutes, 1974)

Lillian Russell: This is a strained bio of the early 2Oth-century megastar. Lavish surroundings and weak plot line decrease Faye’s work. Arnold replicates his Diamond Jim Brady role with zest. Cast includes Alice Faye, Don Ameche, Henry Fonda, Edward Arnold, Warren William, Leo Carrillo, and Nigel Bruce. (127 minutes, 1940)

Raintree County: Clift is a small town Hoosier who makes the blunder of wedding Southern belle Taylor before the start of the Civil War. Intense performing and memorable Johnny Green score help make up for the over-long script. Clift was maimed in near-lethal automobile mishap throughout production, and his work understandably agonizes for it. Cast includes Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift, Eva Marie Savior, Lee Marvin, and Nigel Patrick. (168 minutes, 1957)

Cry Freedom: An empathetic film in dealing with the life of South African activist Steve Biko (well played by Washington) and his kinship with crusading newspaper editor Donald Woods (Kline). Regrettably second half of film, minus the Biko personality, loses itself as it invests too much time on Kline and his families flee from South Africa. Cast includes Kevin Kline, Penelope Wilton, Denzel Washington, Kevin McNally, John Defrost, Timothy West, Juanita Waterman, John Hargreaves, Alec McCowen, Zakes Mokae, and Ian Richardson. (157 minutes, 1987)
