Airsoft Guns: Firearms Or Toys?

by Anthony Carter

Fascination with guns has always been a favored past time of many people. Guns are usually associated with military weapons and firearms. There are people that collect guns, use them for recreational purposes, sporting and for fun. Airsoft guns are recreational toy guns used for training, target practicing and just plain fun.

Airsoft guns are toy guns that are molded after real firearms however; they shot pellets instead of real bullets. The pellets are expelled from the barrel of the gun by either a spring mechanism or compressed gas. Regular bullets are expelled from a gun by an explosion. Pellets are made from soft metal such as cooper or plastic whereas bullets are made of lead and fire powder.

Plastic pellets are rarely known to pierce the skin but when fired from certain distance it is possible to puncture the skin. A pellet made of a soft metal fired at a certain distance and velocity has been known to pierce the skin. Protective gear is always recommended when playing with airsoft guns. Recreational facilities are known to impose age requirements of 16 or 18 on any airsoft gun users.

Airsoft guns originated in Japan in the 1970’s and were designed with spring mechanisms. They were later improved by adding a compressed gas driven mechanism. In the 1990’s the fascination with these recreational toy guns made it to the United States. However, for safety precautions any airsoft gun in the US must be marked with a bright orange tip.

Airsoft guns come in many shapes and sizes with many being toy reproductions of actual firearms. Trademark rights are required for anyone creating any reproduction of an already existing real firearm. If you purchase an airsoft gun that is a replica be sure the manufacturer has trademark rights or the toy will be illegal.

Accessories make a gun more user-friendly and are available for airsoft guns as well. The accessories are imitations of the real thing and can cause the airsoft guns to increase in price dramatically. Accessories such as magazines, clips, spotlights and scopes are available for the airsoft guns.

As mentioned earlier, airsoft guns were originally produced with spring loaded firing mechanisms. Once compressed gas was introduced this allowed the firing mechanism to be built into the gun or placed on the outside of the guns. Outside mounted mechanisms are much like the paintball guns. Electric airsoft guns that use rechargeable batteries for the firing mechanism are also available.

The classic BB gun and airsoft guns are very similar; however; airsoft guns can be modeled after traditional firearms as long as the manufacture has trademark rights. Airsoft guns are exceptional for training purposes and for recreational fun. As with any guns, airsoft guns should be handled properly and with care. Many gun lovers can find joy in these toy reproductions without the concern of real danger.
